Portland's Walk of the Heroines

Community Supporters

The Walk of the Heroines has been endorsed by many community leaders. Here is what some of them have written in support of the project:

“The Walk is a perfect example of shining the light on outstanding women and their part in our history, a unique and exciting bringing together of education, history, and tribute.” More »
     — Barbara Roberts, Governor of Oregon 1991-1995
“I want to emphasize the close alignment of the Walk’s mission with that of Portland State University. We believe in the power of educational opportunity, the value of each individual’s unique contribution to society, and the strength to be found in diversity. I can’t imagine a project that better illustrates these ideals than does Portland’s Walk of the Heroines.” More »
     — Daniel O. Bernstine, President, Portland State University
“The Walk will add to the economic prosperity of Portland by being another destination that will contribute to the beauty and livability of our city.” More »
     — Gale Castillo, Executive Director, Hispanic Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce

In December 2002 the Portland Design Review Commission unanimously approved the design of the Walk. Many members of the Commission expressed enthusiastic support for the plan, as well as respect for the integrity of the process. These are just a few of their comments:

“I want to thank you for bringing this in front of us. It's an exceptional project in design and vision, and in its process. I look forward to seeing its execution. I think it will be a wonderful space for men and women alike.”
“It’s a real joy, and I think it’s fairly rare for this Commission to have a project before it where the project is based on ideas and ideals . . . when it’s not about dollars and cents and placing people in square feet. It really just shines through that this project is all about ideas and really comes from a heart and a collective soul.”
